スペースシャトル唯一の打ち上げ後中止、ChallengerのAbort-to-Orbit
STS-51-F Abort-to-Orbit (1985)
STS-51-Fは1985年7月29日に打ち上げられたChallengerの8回目の飛行で、Spacelab 2を主搭載し、赤外線望遠鏡やプラズマ観測装置を運用した。打ち上げから3分31秒後、中心エンジンの温度センサーが故障し、続いて右エンジンのセンサーも異常を示した。Booster Systems EngineerのJenny M. Howardが自動停止を抑制するよう進言し、2基目のエンジン停止を防いだ。その結果、Abort-to-Orbit（ATO）が実行され、計画より低い軌道でミッションは続行された。スペースシャトル計画で打ち上げ後に中止した唯一の事例である。
Booster Systems Engineer Jenny M. Howard acted quickly to recommend that the crew inhibit any further automatic RS-25 shutdowns based on readings from the remaining sensors, preventing the potential shutdown of a second engine and a possible abort mode that may have resulted in the loss of crew and vehicle (LOCV).
