In the Spring 2026 Metaculus Cup, the community forecast a mean of just under 70 runs for the World Baseball Classic knockout stage; the actual total was 59. The author, who admits knowing nothing about baseball, started from historical per-game run rates, then noticed team-level run counts were overdispersed — variance more than twice the mean — and fit a negative binomial model. Summing 14 such draws for seven games gave a tight, accurate forecast.
