NetBSD ships a 48-kilobyte editor to rescue newcomers from vi
NetBSD adds a new beginner-friendly text editor called atto

NetBSD -current now includes atto(1), a modeless, screen-based editor in the base system as an alternative to vi(1) and xedit(1). It resembles nano, pico, or emacs, supports UTF-8, and weighs just 48 kilobytes, small enough for the rescue system. The Foundation notes it eases the transition for new users, while its man page dryly states that atto is not the standard editor.
Users can figure out how to use atto in 10 seconds by spamming key combinations and being greeted with "Not bound - try ctrl+x+w to write and ctrl+x+c to exit".
