CERN and Mistral team up to build the first foundation model for collider physics

CERN and Mistral have signed a statement of intent for a long-term partnership to develop foundation models for scientific discovery. The centerpiece is a single pretrained Large Physics Model trained on billions of simulated proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, meant to handle tasks from reconstructing collisions and identifying particles to flagging unexpected signals and evaluating detector designs. CERN holds about one exabyte of LHC data, and the HL-LHC is expected to increase collision numbers tenfold around 2030.

High-energy physics provides a unique environment in which artificial intelligence can be developed and tested with exceptional rigour.
