A Dartmouth Provost Used AI to Write the Email Denying He Relies on AI
Credit where credit is due
Semafor ran 310 guest op-eds through the Pangram AI detector and flagged 50 as likely LLM-written, including one by Dartmouth provost Santiago Schnell. When The Dartmouth asked him about it, Schnell emailed back insisting he only uses AI for "language refinement" — and that email was itself 100% AI-written, per Pangram. The author argues that signing your name to a text doesn't make you its author, and that hiding machine help is like hiding a nuclear program.
Insisting that your undisclosed LLM use remains circumspect is a bit like insisting that your covert nuclear program is only for energy production. Maybe that's true, but then why did you hide the facility?
