Seoul Biosys Begins Production of Rare Earth-Free White Micro LEDs

Seoul Biosys has begun mass production of white micro LEDs that need no rare earth phosphors or packaging, using its WICOP technology to mount chips directly on substrates. The first product is a 25µm x 10µm chip delivering about 100 lm/W, with a target of 200 lm/W within two years. The company says costs could fall to half of current levels, and it plans to push into AR displays and AI optical communication.
We began development out of curiosity about why rare earth elements were necessary to create white light.
