Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce

Microsoft is offering voluntary exit packages to roughly 60,000 employees, about a quarter of its staff, across the U.S., U.K., Canada, and India, limited to those at level 70 and below. The terms mirror Microsoft's standard severance, and the company says AI isn't driving the move — though it has been cutting jobs for years while pouring billions into AI infrastructure. A similar early-retirement offer earlier this year drew about 30% uptake; Microsoft expects fewer takers this time.
This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice to make that transition now with support. It also gives participating organizations another way to adapt their workforce to changing needs.
