The President of the English Spelling Society Wants to Start Small
Reforming English Spelling

English spelling has resisted reform since the English Spelling Society was founded in 1908, and wars, spellcheckers, and AI have only pushed the cause further aside. Its president argues for a minimalist program: drop silent or redundant letters in words like community, sufficient, and dumb, regularize g before i and e, and win over teachers, foreign learners, and popular culture rather than waiting for legislators.
At this stage, our modest goal is, as I believe, to change at least something without offending anyone.
