Yara Reads is a free, open-source reading app built for kids who've just mastered their phonics sounds. Every word in a story can be sounded out using sounds the child already knows—tap a word and its sound buttons appear right there. A built-in checker validates stories word by word against the child's known sounds by pronunciation, not just spelling, so no unreadable words sneak in. Bring your own agent via MCP to generate stories or import books you own, and toggle sounds and tricky words on or off. It runs on Cloudflare Workers with D1 and R2, no account needed to start.
I made it for my daughter Yara. She'd finished Teach Your Monster to Read and I couldn't find anything for her to read next that was both a good story and made only of words she could sound out.
