Deno is joining Cloudflare and winding down its runtime, but the alternative-runtime experiment wasn't a failure. Deno's push for permissions, TypeScript, and web standards forced Node to ship fetch, a stable test runner, and a permission model. Bun's speed race did the same for package managers. The ecosystem kept the ideas even as the runtimes consolidated.
A mature open source project rarely lacks good ideas. It lacks urgency, & competitors supply that urgency.
