Cyberattack Forces French Supermarkets to Defrost, Destroying Food
French supermarkets suffer refrigerator shutdown after unprecedented cyberattack
A cyberattack hit major French supermarket chains E. Leclerc, Intermarche, and Cooperative U, remotely raising refrigerator temperatures in hundreds of stores. At least 300 Intermarche and Netto shops and over 100 Cooperative U outlets were affected, forcing spoiled fresh and frozen products to be thrown away. Paris prosecutors opened an investigation into the large-scale attack, which also sparked fires. The hackers reportedly targeted legacy Danfoss refrigeration control systems, raising concerns about food security and hybrid attacks on critical infrastructure.
Targeting equipment essential to the preservation of fresh products and to the food supply of the French people is extremely serious and is unprecedented. It is unacceptable.
