Mistral's 1-Trillion-Parameter Open Model Beats GPT-6 on Visual Grounding
Mistral Large 4: "Le Chonk"

Mistral Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter natively multimodal model with 49 billion active parameters, is now in public preview, with weights dropping by month's end. Trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Europe, it outperforms all open-weight models from the US and Europe, and even surpasses frontier closed models like GPT-6 Astra on visual grounding. It excels at cybersecurity, agentic coding, and knowledge work, and is designed for AI sovereignty.
Several leading closed models, including Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, score near zero on the same test because they refuse to perform the task. Yet defending software often starts with proving that a flaw is real, exactly the kind of work safety filters in closed models can block.
