다임과 쿼터로는 절대 감당 못 할 PDP-11 게임기, Galaxy Game이 다시 살아나다

1962년 MIT의 PDP-1에서 탄생한 Spacewar!는 Stanford AI Lab의 PDP-10으로 퍼져나갔고, 1971년 Bill Pitts와 Hugh Tuck은 이를 실제 PDP-11/20과 HP 1300A X-Y 디스플레이로 구현한 Galaxy Game을 Stanford의 Tresidder Union에 설치했다. 한 시간씩 줄을 서도 하드웨어 값을 결코 메우지 못했지만 Pitts는 진짜 경험을 원했다. 1979년 디스플레이 프로세서가 멈춘 뒤 1997년 부활했고, 이제 ICM이 50년 된 20kV 정전 편향 튜브의 복원에 나선다.
No amount of dimes and quarters was ever going to pay for that hardware, however long the lines got, and they got up to an hour long. Pitts didn’t care: he wanted an authentic experience in the direct line of the PDP-1, PDP-6 and PDP-10 game.
