Nordstjernen, Northstar, Southstar: minimalist webbrowsers in C and Rust

A Norwegian browser written from scratch in C passes 91.5% of web platform tests

Nordstjernen is a clean-room browser engine built in Norway, with roughly 245,000 lines of original C and no JIT anywhere. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and BSD, and now passes 91.5% of the Web Platform Tests for HTML, DOM and URL. Two siblings share the engine: Northstar, a single-window desktop build, and Southstar, a full Rust port that reached 1.0 in October 2026.

The core engine is about 245,000 lines of project C and headers, excluding the vendored libraries and generated assets — small enough for one person to read and audit end-to-end.
