AI Slop Is Flooding GitHub's Awesome Lists
Awesome repositories are no longer awesome
Awesome lists on GitHub used to be goldmines of curated resources, but two AI-driven problems are eroding them. Unmaintained lists go stale — awesome-R still links to a 2016 ranking of top packages. Meanwhile, bots and vibe-coders flood small repos with pull requests promoting generic AI-generated tools; one user submitted over 100 PRs across lists to push six vibe-coded sites. Some maintainers push back, but the format is losing its edge.
A lot of these awesome repositories are being flooded with AI slop.
