Self-Employed? Solopreneur? NIST Has a Cybersecurity Guide Just for You

NIST Writes a Cybersecurity Guide for the 28 Million Americans Who Work Alone

NIST's new white paper, Small Business Cybersecurity: Non-Employer Firms, is a plain-language guide built for solopreneurs — the sole paid employees of more than 28 million U.S. small businesses. Drawing on the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, it assumes no prior security knowledge, pairing each recommended action with the reasoning behind it, a way to start, and steps for later growth, plus worksheets and three hypothetical use cases.

This publication assumes the reader has no familiarity with cybersecurity or the NIST CSF. We want to educate people about what cybersecurity is and how it fits in with a successful business plan.
