Claude Opus 5.5 Can Now Draft Permit-Ready Architectural Drawings
Claude Opus 5.5 Can Draw Permit-Level Architectural Drawings

Architect Stephen J. Gallagher tested 13 AI models on a simple house, feeding each his concept sketches and a reference drawing set. Most produced crude, cartoonish output; Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, released in September 2026, generated a permit-quality construction set. Working without CAD software, it wrote over 15,000 lines of Python to produce editable vector linework, taking 12 hours and a few hundred dollars. Gallagher argues architects now face the shift software engineers already went through.
Experimenting with the latest models, first casually and then more systematically, gave me a growing sense that architects are in the position of Wile E. Coyote in the old cartoons, hanging for a moment in the air over a canyon.
