A 12-year-old and his dad built a working computer inside an Altoids tin

A father and his 12-year-old son spent two months building a tiny computer inside an Altoids tin. Starting from a free robot kit scored at MIT Swapfest, they reused its 128x64 display, switched to an Arduino Nano, and iterated through five versions. The son handled all the CAD and 3D printing, and most of the soldering by the end. AI failed to identify the display's pinout, but a stranger on the Arduino forum saved the day.

We tried using AI, but it hallucinated so badly that it gave us a 20-pin pinout when the display only has 10 pins.

More from this day
