The license isn't what makes software free—its community is
The importance of communities around software
After years of advocating for strong copyleft licenses, lumi now argues that a project's community, not its license, determines its values. Even an AGPL-3.0 project can be corporate-controlled and hostile to freedom if it forces a contributor license agreement and dual-licenses commercially. Lumi lists questions to ask: inclusive code of conduct, bans on generative models, corporate control, and endorsement of proprietary platforms like Discord and GitHub. The call to action: join communities, contribute however you can, and speak up against unethical practices.
For every person speaking up, there will be many that can't or won't speak up; be their voice.
