Cuis keeps Smalltalk-80 alive with a simple, portable, free environment
Cuis: The Modern Smalltalk-80

Cuis is a free Smalltalk-80 environment built around two goals: staying simple and staying powerful. It runs on any platform, and it's fast and efficient. The project is still active, with a 7.8 stable release, eight talks from the Cuis community at Smalltalks 2026 in Rosario, Argentina, and a Stream Deck plugin for controlling the system.
I like it… It's nice and clean and simple and pretty. Nice stuff!

Same VM as Squeak and Pharo so just as fast but a bit lacking in libs but this is an opportunity to contribute to open source for me.
Currently using it to build a mostly static website (with Pocketbase & lighttpd). A good experience all round.

What most people do not know is that Smalltalk was originally a childrens' teaching language, a peer of Logo, which (I have learned in previous comments) preceded it.
"Smalltalk is a purely object-oriented programming language that was originally created in the 1970s for educational use, specifically for constructionist learning, but later found use in business."
