Google kills cloud features on early Nest thermostats, turning them into dumb devices
Google has officially turned these Nest thermostats back into dumb thermostats

Google ended support for first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats in October 2025, cutting off app control, remote access, and Google Assistant integration. The devices still work manually, but an open-source project called No Longer Evil, developed by Cody Kociemba, restores cloud functionality through custom firmware and a self-hosted or hosted server, giving users remote control and scheduling again.
Just about everything that made a Nest Learning Thermostat a Nest Learning Thermostat is gone, and the first- and second-generation models now have a gutted feature set.
