Florida officer found dead man, impersonated him for years, renovated his home
Lauderhill officer Brian Louis Sguros responded to a welfare check in 2022 and found 71-year-old Dennis West dead of natural causes. Weeks later, police say, Sguros took over the home, forged West's signature on a repair permit, paid taxes and utilities in the dead man's name, and claimed he spent at least $214,000 renovating it. He now faces felony charges, including criminal use of a deceased person's identification.
Sguros presented himself to the medical examiner's office as West's friend, though there is no indication that Sguros knew West.
