Tesla profits plunge 43% as its regulatory credit lifeline dries up

Tesla's Q3 2026 net profit fell 43% to $787 million on flat $28 billion revenue. Automotive revenue slipped 3%, and the once-growing energy storage and solar business shrank 16%. Regulatory credit sales collapsed to $113 million from $417 million a year earlier, while operating expenses jumped 39% and capital expenditures doubled, cutting the operating margin to 2.6%.

Tesla can no longer rely on selling regulatory credits to other automakers: these fell to $113 million this quarter, down from $417 million in Q3 2025.
