OpenAI's thousands of AI agents sift millions of brain cells in 32 minutes
OpenAI: Using AI agents to uncover new leads in biological data
OpenAI, PerturbAI, and Scripps Research split a whole-brain CRISPR atlas across thousands of GPT-Rosalind agents, which analyzed millions of mouse brain cells in 32 minutes instead of the months a human review would take. The agents linked gene disruptions to the literature and surfaced unexpected leads, including a possible tie between cholesterol regulation and neurodegeneration. In blinded comparisons, experts preferred the distributed agents' reports 75% of the time.
Sometimes the clues are already there, scattered across different fields—we just haven't connected them. The possible link between neuronal function and cholesterol metabolism shows how those pieces, once brought together, can give us a new way to think about disease biology.
