UNEP: The Paris Agreement's 1.5°C target is now out of reach
The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
The United Nations Environment Programme's 2026 Emissions Gap Report declares that the chance to limit warming to 1.5°C with little or no overshoot has been lost. The only remaining path is to hold warming below 2°C and then pull temperatures back down to 1.5°C by 2100. Even with all national pledges fully met, emissions would fall only 5–8% by 2030, far short of the 18% cut needed.
The opportunity to bridge the 1.5°C emissions gap with 'no or limited' overshoot has been lost.
