Rust's next-gen trait solver finally lands after nearly a decade
2026 is an exciting year for the Rust compiler (and me)
2026 marks the year several long-running Rust compiler efforts pay off at once: a next-generation trait solver almost ten years in the making, the Polonius borrow checker, a parallel frontend nearing stabilization, and a wave of performance work including a notably faster LLVM 23. The author, a compiler performance contributor, also explains why he's now working on the Rust project full time.
In other words, 2026 is not that special with the amount of work being done, but it's a year when we see several long-term investments starting to pay dividends.
