A father and his 10-year-old built a voice BBS that logged 26,000 calls, and AI just cracked its code

Sanity's Edge – A voice BBS from 1994

Sanity's Edge was a telephone-only bulletin board run from 1994 to 1997 on a 286 PC in Tampa, Florida, built by a father and his ten-year-old son. Callers dialed in, pressed keys, and left voice messages in an asylum-themed world. The line took over 26,000 calls and 46,000 messages. After the father's death, a backup CD surfaced; three generations of AI eventually decoded the proprietary audio and rebuilt the missing C source.

It was a shared creation, and now it has a chance to last. Thank you, Dad, and thank you AI.
