Netflix’s Emmy-winning VMAF sets the standard for video quality
Netflix vmaf: Perceptual video quality assessment based on multi-method fusion
VMAF is Netflix’s Emmy-winning perceptual video quality metric, now open source as a C library and Python wrapper. It includes PSNR, SSIM, and other metrics, plus tools to train custom models. The latest v1 models arrive in June 2026, and VMAF is integrated into FFmpeg and adopted by AOM as the standard metric for codec testing.
VMAF is an Emmy-winning perceptual video quality assessment algorithm developed by Netflix.

VMAF is super cool, although not the end-all-be-all of video quality measurement for sure. I'm currently evaluating switching over to the new v1.0 models.
The (unsolicited) slop PRs on that repository are a sight to behold, though. The same slopper posted an aggressive response to my PR: https://github.com/Netflix/vmaf/pull/1586

I was hoping this would be a post announcing the death of VMAF from Netflix, alas.
