Gentoo Gives Up on Chromium After Years of Maintainer Burnout
Last rites for Gentoo's Chromium package
Gentoo has declared "last rites" for its Chromium package, effectively abandoning it after years of struggling to keep up with upstream churn, bundled dependencies, and hundreds of weekly CVEs. Maintainer Sam James cited burnout and the difficulty of packaging Chromium from source, noting it takes over six hours a week just to compile. The package is now masked, but users can still adopt it before the last-rites period ends on October 24.
Chromium is horrible to maintain as a source package. It is easily the package in Gentoo that burns through maintainers the most.
