New York City's iconic horse-drawn carriages face final trot as ban looms
New York City's iconic horse-drawn carriages expected to take their last trot
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have reached a deal to phase out Central Park's horse-drawn carriages by June 1, 2028. The ban, spurred by the death of tourist Romanch Mahajan, includes protections against slaughter and a transition plan for workers. The drivers' union calls it political opportunism.
Council Speaker Menin used the tragic death of a tourist to contrive a public safety crisis. This is disgraceful political opportunism, and Zohran should not simply go along with it, particularly when immigrant families' livelihoods are being destroyed.
