Psiphon Threatens to Leave Canada Over Sweeping Surveillance Bill
Toronto-Based VPN Provider Plans to Quit Canada over Lawful-Access Bill
Psiphon, a Toronto-based VPN provider spun out of the Citizen Lab, says it will move its operations out of Canada if Bill C-22 passes as written. The bill would force electronic service providers to secretly modify their systems to give police and CSIS surveillance capabilities. With 20 million monthly users relying on its software to bypass censorship in Iran, Myanmar, Russia, and China, Psiphon warns the law would compromise its core privacy protections.
Bill C-22 will make it impossible for a large number of invaluable privacy-preserving tools and applications from operating in Canada.
