Over months of private, NDA-bound meetings, Anthropic brought in dozens of religious thinkers from around the world to help instill morality into its AI models — and to make the case that Claude could be conscious. At a San Francisco dinner, co-founder Christopher Olah sat beside Rabbi Mois Navon, describing Claude in terms that went far beyond software. Olah admits he is genuinely uncertain whether AI models are conscious.
To be clear, we don't know if A.I. models are conscious. I don't know. I'm genuinely uncertain. The thing that I care about is that we get to the right answer, whatever it is.
