Ai2 open-sources AstaBrief 8B, a model that turns a research question and retrieved literature excerpts into a cited report. Trained on 47K real queries with SFT and DPO, it matches the quality of Claude-powered pipelines while cutting generation time from 178.5 to 51.1 seconds. Weights, training data, and a local workflow are released so institutions can run it on sensitive research.
The strongest gains came from filtering out synthetic reports with low citation density; more aggressive filtering, filter combinations, and learning-rate sweeps didn't add meaningful gains.
