Nobody Is Listening on Port 8125 — And That's Fine

A Fedora box named stick has been sending StatsD datagrams to 127.0.0.1:8125 ten times a second for a week, but nothing is listening. The metrics still show up in Grafana. The trick: an eBPF program watches port 8125 at the traffic control layer, and a JavaScript decoder turns the lines into Prometheus families. The app keeps doing fire-and-forget UDP, and nothing changes on the host except yeet. This is the first post in a series replacing common exporters with yeet scripts.

The listener is the second reader of every packet. So we asked the first one.

I understand that you can do this, but I'm not sure i understand the rationale. I can't imagine that this is a hot enough path that this makes sense from a performance perspective, so why? What's the benefit?

Naively the thing this is replacing sounds like a much better solution than the replacement is.

  2. chanux

It sounds like the solution simplifies something but I could not figure out how or what.

  3. therein

    Pretty strange thing to do.

That aside, definitely AI written. The cadence is a dead giveaway.
