Halfspace: An Experimental IDE That Makes Distance Fields the Star

Halfspace is an experimental IDE for solid modeling with distance fields, built on the Fidget kernel. It lets you incrementally build models, visualize the underlying fields, and export images or triangle meshes. The author, Matt Keeter, has been developing it since April 2025 and emphasizes it is not vibe-coded. The tool is cross-platform, targeting both web and native, and has driven improvements in GPU-accelerated rendering.

Working with low-level implicit surfaces is a bit like writing assembly: it's low-level, powerful, and annoying.

Note that Matt Keeter has been at this for quite a while now, very generously sharing his efforts and research:

In particular, his thesis is well-worth reading: https://www.mattkeeter.com/research/thesis.pdf

    > My favorite project along those lines is Kartik Agaram's Mu[3], which wraps emulation, tracing, and time-travel debugging around a subset of x86 assembly language.

From https://akkartik.name/code : Mu[1], a safe, hackable computing stack that builds up from raw machine code (guided tour[2]; paper '20[3]; talk '20[4]; sample app[5])

    I'm waiting for Halfspace 3.
