Israel Keeps Expanding into Gaza Despite Cease-Fire, Satellite Images Show
Nearly a year after the U.S.-backed cease-fire took effect, Israel has entrenched and expanded its control in Gaza, building at least a dozen military outposts and moving beyond the agreed withdrawal line, according to a New York Times analysis of satellite imagery. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel now controls about 60 percent of the territory and has no plans to withdraw until Hamas disarms. Most of Gaza's two million residents are squeezed into a shrinking Hamas-ruled area, while demolitions and new barriers continue.
On paper, the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has been in effect for almost a year. In reality, Israel has entrenched and expanded its control in the Palestinian territory — and its leaders say they have little intention of withdrawing any time soon.
