'Pink Slime' Is Infecting AI Chatbots Ahead of the Midterms
A NewsGuard audit found that seven leading AI chatbots cited pink slime sites—partisan outlets posing as local news—in 48.2% of responses about key midterm races. ChatGPT topped the list at 70.8%, followed by Copilot and Perplexity at 54.2%. Left-leaning sites were cited three times more often than right-leaning ones, likely due to higher posting volume. Only one of 168 responses flagged the source's partisanship, effectively laundering propaganda as neutral fact.
The more diverse this information comes, the more that this affects the amplification. Not only does it affect amplification, it affects future AI. It’s not a tool to be scared of, it’s a tool to be leveraged.
