Atlantic Shatters 60-Year Record With No Hurricane Through Sept. 12
No Atlantic hurricanes by Sept. 12 breaks a 60-year record
The Atlantic has gone without a hurricane through Sept. 12 for the first time since satellite tracking began in 1966. A strengthening El Niño may be limiting tropical development, and if no hurricane forms by Sept. 22, the season will break a pre-satellite record from 1941. It also marks the third straight year with no hurricane by the peak of the season.
If this year's Atlantic season has no hurricanes by Nov. 30, that will be only the third such season on record, preceded by 1914 and 1907.

The lack of hurricanes also means that heat is not being removed from the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, future hurricanes are likely to be more powerful and more frequent.

In 1877, 50 million people starved to death from El Niño. The charts are looking far worse in 2026 (thankfully our supply chains and infrastructure are much better today)
