Sprite: The 1980s Research OS That Built the Fastest Network File System in Existence
A Brief Retrospective on the Sprite Network Operating System
In a retrospective on Sprite, the network operating system he led at UC Berkeley starting in 1984, John Ousterhout recounts building networking into the kernel from scratch. Sprite's network file system, transparent process migration, single system image, and log-structured file system let a cluster of workstations behave like one machine. Five years on, it still had the fastest network file system anywhere, and it supported up to 80 daily users.
Five years after its construction, Sprite still has the fastest network file system in existence.

Walnut Creek sold a Sprite CD-ROM back in the day. I got Sprite to boot on a Sun SPARCStation IPC. It was kind of unstable. I really wanted to try process migration and the log structured file system.
