LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
An investigation by Gamers Nexus, Level1Techs, and independent researchers found that LG smart TVs (including the G5 OLED) actively scan home networks, mapping phones, smartwatches, and other devices, and log microphone audio even in standby mode. The data, along with Wi-Fi network names and location info, is sent to LG Ad Solutions. The TVs also run Automated Content Recognition (ACR) to track viewing habits. The team discovered remote code execution vulnerabilities in webOS and recommends disconnecting the TV from the internet.
When the team disconnected the TV from Ethernet, the set continued saving voice input locally and uploaded the stored files once network access was restored.
