Alberta slaps $14-per-panel 'recycling fee' on solar panels, drawing charges of a punitive tax
Alberta (Canada) slaps punitive tax on solar panels

Alberta's United Conservative Party government has imposed a $14-per-panel recycling fee on solar panels, effective Oct. 1, and will ban them from landfills. The Business Renewables Centre-Canada calls it a 'punitive tax' 139% to 3,500% higher than any other jurisdiction, lacking justification. Critics see it as another move in the UCP's war on renewables, following a 2023 ban that drove away billions in investment.
While BRC supports the introduction of a recycling fee, we cannot support a punitive tax far exceeding any other jurisdiction.
