Interview with a Maintainer

One Maintainer, Eighty Million Downloads: The Reality of Open Source Infrastructure

I maintain libcapstan, a foundational protocol used by millions, mostly alone. While AI agents flood my repository with polite but often useless pull requests, the real bottleneck remains human review. I navigate automated security scanners that get me banned for testing exploits and vendors who monetize my own patches. The ecosystem is shifting, but the responsibility for critical infrastructure still rests on a few tired shoulders.

I now maintain a good chunk of my own dependency tree. I've stopped reporting bugs upstream.
  1. Shalomboy

My greatest fear is that every maintainer living a life like this decides to give up.

  2. Copenjin

Ok, it's satire, check the tags.

  3. john_strinlai

i went to quote a small line or two that i found particularly funny or relatable, but ended up having like half the post in my comment. really love andrew's satire posts.
