Mastering Emacs Dired: A Deep Dive into My File Management Workflow

I share my daily habits and configuration for using Emacs Dired as a powerful file browser. Moving beyond the command line and Midnight Commander, I leverage Dired's flexibility to handle complex file operations, batch image conversions, and remote directory access. This guide covers my keybindings, regex-based file selection, and integration with external tools like GraphicsMagick to streamline my workflow.

I decided not to just describe configuration and that's all— you could read a lot of likewise blogposts already. Instead of it I also would like to describe how I am using Dired every day.

Just FYI, dired without any configuring or customizing is pretty rad, especially with wdired-mode for editing filenames. You don't need to read this blog post to benefit from it.

Also, wgrep-mode for editing files is amazing

  2. xenodium

Tangentially related, I wrote https://github.com/xenodium/dwim-shell-command to save all sorts of command invocations (I'm looking at you ffmpeg) and easily batch apply to dired files. Here's a demo video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77NtPfgr4x0

Thanks, dired-hide-details-mode is particularly neato. I also learned a few things about marking.
