Jane Austen의 『오만과 편견』 첫 문장에 있는 쉼표는 그녀가 직접 쓴 것이 아닐 가능성이 크다. 그녀의 필사본을 보면 대시를 즐겨 썼고 쉼표는 거의 쓰지 않았다. 출판 과정에서 편집자 William Gifford가 문법과 구두점을 다듬으면서 우리가 'Austen다운'이라고 여기는 매끄러운 문체가 만들어졌다. Florence Hazrat의 신간 『On the Mark』는 문장부호의 역사를 통해 인류 문명의 변화를 조명한다.
