2018년부터 13,000회 이상 조회된 Signal 커뮤니티의 전화번호 없는 가입 요청이 실제 코드로 이어지고 있다. 2026년 8월 Signal-Android 커밋에는 로그인 화면 골격과 username 등록이 추가됐고, 9월에는 numberless account 등록·로그인, zkgroup credential 적용, PIN 알림 숨김까지 구현됐다. 기부 배지와 백업 결제에 쓰이던 zero-knowledge proofs가 계정 인증에도 활용되는 구조다.
zero-knowledge proofs are not only the technology behind donation badges and backup payments, but also behind groups. they can’t tie you to a specific donation just like they can’t tie you to a specific group.
