Meta Patents Facial Recognition Glasses That Auto-Record People
Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
Meta has filed a patent for a 'memory recall' system in its Ray-Ban smart glasses that uses facial recognition to automatically record people and later present highlights. This comes amid criticism of the glasses being used for surreptitious recording, despite a capture LED meant to indicate recording. Meta has previously taken steps to disable the camera if the LED is covered, but a future version may record without the indicator. The patent includes examples like generating highlights of a dinner party without asking for consent. While a patent doesn't guarantee the feature's release, Meta's consideration of it raises privacy concerns, especially after it was caught sending sensitive recordings to workers for training.
While mobile phones and action cameras don’t have this on their cameras, ours have had them since day one.
