FAA finally retires the floppy disks running America's air traffic control
FAA Begins Retiring Decades Old Floppy Disks from Air Traffic Control
The FAA is replacing four 1980s-era systems still running on floppy disks at more than 400 facilities with E-IDS, a single secure display system for weather, alerts, and pilot reports. The first sites include Atlantic City, Nashville, and Rochester, plus data hubs in Atlanta and Salt Lake City, with 435 sites planned by the end of 2028. The agency says it has already replaced 69% of copper wiring and installed 226 IP voice switches.
Good news America: floppy disks are out, 21st century tech is in.
