Europe's newest weather satellite will image the continent every 2.5 minutes
MTG-I2 First Images

EUMETSAT has released the first full-disc image from the Flexible Combined Imager aboard MTG-I2, captured just over two months after the satellite launched on 27 August 2026. Shot from geostationary orbit 36,000 km up, it shows cloud detail across Europe, Africa and the Atlantic, and a rapid-scan animation previews the operational service: high-resolution views of Europe every 2.5 minutes, aimed at earlier warnings for fast-developing storms and wildfires. Full service is expected in the second quarter of 2027.
Just two months after launch, MTG-I2 shows us what rapid scanning will make possible: a much timelier view of fast-developing weather over Europe.
