A living map tracks Bay Area tech employers back to the 1960s

Living Maps: Bay Area tech since 1960s

T. Udell's Living Maps project charts Bay Area workplaces from 1960 to 2026 for employers with more than 1,000 worldwide employees in at least one documented year. Bubbles mark headquarters, branches, offices, R&D sites, and factories rather than headcounts, and each one links to dated evidence and sources. The map treats gaps in records as missing data, not closures, and keeps older observations unverified until confirmed.

Gaps are not closures: supported presence intervals remain visible; short carry-forwards are labeled estimated.

huh did not realize how empty San Francisco was off tech itself until the mid 2010's almost

heard there was a lot more finance / creative industry here, have they left or just been crowded by tech?
