DoorDash to Buy Instacart for $17 Billion, Betting Local Grocers Can Beat the Giants

DoorDash to Acquire Instacart

DoorDash has agreed to acquire Instacart in a deal valuing the grocery technology company at about $17 billion, or $65 per share — a 26% premium over its last close before reports of a possible transaction surfaced. At least 75% of the consideration is cash. DoorDash says combining its delivery network with Instacart's grocery and fulfillment technology will give local retailers the tools to compete with the biggest online players, add 50,000 stores to Instacart's reach, and let DashPass and Instacart+ members pay one fee instead of two. The deal is expected to close in late 2027 or the first half of 2028, pending regulatory approval.

Grocery is one of the hardest things to get right online. Someone has to pick a ripe avocado, find a substitute you'd choose yourself, and get the ice cream to you before it melts.
